In recent years, fiber optics has been steadily replacing copper wire as a preferred means of communication signal transmission. They are extensively used for long-distance connections between local phone systems and serve as the backbone for many network systems. Fiber optics find applications in cable television services, university campuses, office buildings, industrial plants, and electric utility companies.

A fiber-optic system operates by using light pulses to transmit information down fiber lines instead of electronic pulses used in copper wire systems. The system consists of a transmitter at one end, which accepts coded electronic pulse information from copper wire and translates it into equivalently coded light pulses. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or injection-laser diodes (ILDs) generate these light pulses, which are then funneled into the fiber-optic medium using a lens. Fiber cables act as waveguides, guiding the light pulses down the line. The principle of total internal reflection allows light pulses to travel easily down the fiber-optic line. Total internal reflection states that when the angle of incidence exceeds a critical value, light cannot escape the glass and instead bounces back. This principle enables the transmission of information in the form of light pulses through fiber lines.

There are different types of fiber optic cables available, such as multimode cables and single-mode cables. Multimode cables, typically with core diameters of 50, 62.5, or 100 micrometers, disperse light waves into numerous paths or modes as they travel through the cable’s core. They provide high bandwidth at high speeds over medium distances. However, in long cable runs (greater than 3000 feet or 914.4 meters), multiple paths of light can cause signal distortion at the receiving end, resulting in unclear and incomplete data transmission. Single-mode cables, on the other hand, are designed for longer distances and offer clearer data transmission.

The use of fiber optics for telecommunications became feasible in 1970 when Corning Glass Works developed a fiber with an attenuation of 20 dB/km or less. Today, optical fiber attenuation ranges from 0.5 dB/km to 1000 dB/km, depending on the intended application.

The applications of optical fiber communications have grown rapidly since the first commercial installation of a fiber-optic system in 1977. Telephone companies have extensively replaced their old copper wire systems with optical fiber lines, using fiber optics throughout their system as the backbone architecture and for long-distance connections between city phone systems. Cable television companies have also integrated fiber optics into their systems, replacing trunk lines with optical fiber. Fiber to the curb, a hybrid system combining fiber and coaxial cable, has been experimented with to provide optical receiver nodes that convert light impulses back to electronic signals for distribution to individual homes via coaxial cable. Optical fiber is also widely used in local area networks (LAN) within colleges, universities, office buildings, and industrial plants.

Power companies are emerging as users of fiber optics in their communication systems. Many power utilities already employ fiber-optic communication systems to monitor their power grid systems.
